How can something SO beautiful be so evil?

Gardening Add comments

I know, you say that about me ALL the time.

So, I told you about my ground cover (Erodium cicutarium aka Common Stork’s Bill aka Redstem filaree) on my front lawn, right?  I posted pictures of it on Myspace, and my mom immediately told me I needed to get rid of it.

But why?!  Oh, why, mom?! I think it’s SO pretty!

Redstem Stork's Bill

Well, I can now tell you why.  It’s pretty aggressive, and it doesn’t live long.  It blooms, spreads, and then dies.

Then I get a big brown spot in my lawn.  And no grass.  Only dead Redstem Stork’s Bill.

*sad*

I ended up pulling them all up from my lawn last night.  Here’s what they look like out of my lawn.

    Yes, beautiful but EVIL.
Brown grass sucks big ones…but those flowers are so pretty. Tough choice.
Neat looking flower though, true to its name.

Indeed. I totally wanted to let it grow… buuuut…

    Why can’t weeds be ugly?

    LOL!
I was just out front not ten minutes ago and laughed and thought of you, we have a small patch beside our little spa building that has BEAUTIFUL weeds growing there…I pulled them out (purples and yellows, kind of daisy like) and put them in a vase. Then mowed the suckers down.

yeah, we have a bunch of little flowering weeds in our lawn as well. Weed and feed killed off all our Dandy Lions, but left the other stuff. Keeping a tidy lawn is a lot of work. It’s even harder when you have a baby to take care of :)

Redstem Stork’s Bill sure is a perfect name for that thing! Sorry about your brown spot and your (probably) aching back from having to pull those.
