Jumpin on the recycling band wagon…

For some good news…

I’ve decided that I have to recycle in order to really do MY part in averting the madness that has become our daily trash routine.

It’s about time, and I figure NOW is as good a time as any to get started.

Here’s a resource for the recycling of some of the questionable stuff you may not have thought of.

The List of things you can recycle is nearly endless:

  • Aerosol cans
  • Adhesives
  • Aluminum/ Aluminum cans
  • Antifreeze
  • Appliances
  • Asphalt
  • Automotive Products
  • Automobiles
  • Batteries
  • Books
  • Brass
  • Cardboard
  • Carpet & Pads
  • Cleaners & waxes
  • Clothes
  • Computers/ printers
  • Concrete
  • Drums & barrels
  • Eyewear
  • Flammables
  • Fluorescent lighting
  • Freon
  • Furniture
  • Household hazardous waste
  • Ink Jet Cartridges
  • Magazines/ catalogs
  • Mercury
  • Motor Oil - used
  • Newspaper
  • Office Paper
  • Oil filters
  • Paint
  • Pallets
  • Poison
  • Propane tanks
  • Scrap metal
  • Thermostats/ Thermometers
  • Tires
  • Yard waste (branches/leaves/grass/sod)

For the stuff that’s more common, you can easily drop it off at Lakewood Recycling Center. It’s at 1050 Quail St. in Lakewood, CO

They’re open 24/7; paper, recyclable plastic, recyclable metal, recyclable glass… lakewood.org

They make it pretty easy for us newbies. We don’t have to separate any of it– just drop off the following:

  • Newspapers, magazines, office paper, junk mail
  • Telephone books
  • Aluminum, plastic, glass, tin (and more!)
  • Cardboard

All of this goes into any one of those dumpsters, and it’s pretty easy to do this. I’m finding things that I would’ve never thought about… like laundry soap containers (I rinsed these out first), face wash bottles, vitamin bottles, shampoo bottles…

Here’s a link for some recycling guidelines for Louisville, CO…

Also, here’s a handy dandy link that gives you a list of things you can recycle, and then it gives you a list of places you can take them to!!!

hey lady - good post! just an fyi on the rinsing, you don’t need to and it wastes a lot more water if you do. check out this link for a little more info - http://www.idealbite.com/tiplibrary/archives/lime_aid_bust_a_myth_week/

Right! You said that once already, didn’t ya!?

Cheers to my dear friend Brandy– she is my inspiration in moving from “Thinking about recycling” to “Recycle Queen!”

Damn! I had a whole message typed out, then I lost it!

Ok, so. When I lived in Florida every single house had one of those blue recycling bins they pu out on trash days that a recycling truck would come pick up. Talk about Door to Door service! That’s how easy they made it. In Michigan, they charge an extra 10 cents per can or bottle when you buy them. That 10 cents in an incentive to recycle, cuz when you bring all your cans back, you get all those 10 cents’ back. Cool huh? Makes you think you’re making money.
Now that I am living back in Colorado ever time I toss a plastic water bottle away I feel So guilty. So here’s what I have done. I put another trash can by the trash for bottles and cans. I know it will take the two guys I am living with a little time, but I think it’s worth it.

Hmmm, I wonder if it’s possible to lobby for a different recycling policy here in Colorado. I bet if Colorado did something like these other states you wouldn’t see random cans by the side of the roads.

Yep, CO doesn’t have the best recycling programs, that’s for certain. But, if everyone takes the initiative…

It all starts with one person.
