POHA on Faith

Posted in: Philosophy, Spirituality by POHA on August 30, 2006

Writing, for me, is sometimes very similar to me talking just to hear myself talk. It gets lonely in my office all day long… and lonely in my home all night long.  I crave the attention that my friends and loved ones give to me.  So for me, writing, and then seeing you all read my blogs, is essentially feeding my pathological relationship with you…It’s like my diary.  Only not really.  I don’t divulge my most deep dark secrets; I DO tell you how I see it, and I DO use artistic authority to manipulate these words in a way that I feel you’ll be driven to continue to read…It’s all poppycock.  I could make up anything as I go along, and you might read it and believe it.  I could tell you stories, lies, and more, and you might think you’re getting to know me better. For instance, I can come out of the closet to you.  I can tell you that I’m definitely into women, and that I simply cannot get enough pussy to satiate my cravings.  Or I can tell you that I’m pregnant, and I’m not sure whose baby it is, but that I’ve narrowed it down to three lucky men. I could tell you that I’ve quit my job, and only pretend to go to work every day, and I sit online all day long praying I can find something that will come close to paying my bills. I could tell you that I’m really a man, but nevermind, you already know THAT’s not true. The thing is that you never can tell.  You never can tell when I tell you the truth, and you never can tell when anything I say or promote is real.  For that, you must believe.  Most of you know me very well, and most of you are quite comfortable with being able to tell when I’m being serious or when I’m making something up.  For those of you who are uncertain or have any question in your mind, perhaps this one blog will remind you to question it all. And to then find faith. See, that’s what faith is, really.

It’s having enough confidence in your ability to judge truth to believe that what you believe to be true is as close to truth as you can make of it.  Faith doesn’t eliminate all other options, it only gives you the conviction that what you believe is the best set of beliefs for your personal comfort. Many people become confused when faith is applied to the realm of religion.  I know this to be true, because I was raised in religion, in the church, and I’m familiar with the psychology behind it all.  Blind faith, contrary to what you’re taught in the church, isn’t healthy.  Faith does not mean that what you believe is the Right Way, and that anyone who believes differently is the Wrong Way.  Rather, it simply takes what you have learned from the religion, puts it into a perspective where you feel most comfortable with what you’re taught, and then allows you to blossom, grow, and live within the man-made (or church-made) boundaries you define for yourself, as you see fit.Instead of saying, “I know that my God is the only true God,” say, “What I have been taught by this organization feels right for me.” “What I’ve been taught from the lessons I’ve read in this Holy book sounds right, and it works for me.”  Not, “You don’t believe this, and therefore I condemn you to hell.” Own your piece in the puzzle, take responsibility for your own personal, cognitive reasoning, and accept your faith for what it really is!  You’ve made a choice to believe in your God.  Accept that, embrace it, and do not be afraid to say, “This is Right for ME!”Unfortunately this damning fallacy is made all too regularly.  Many Believers in the Church make this very mistake, and in turn they welcome condemnation, damnation, and judgement.  This false pretense makes for a very violent clash between varying religious organizations, especially ones that insist that their belief system is The Only Way, as has been witnessed throughout the entire existence of civilized mankind.  I challenge you to break that mold.  Do not put your comfort clothing on all the paper dolls of the world– know that every human being is a sentient, choosing individual who owns their own lives more purely than any other human can own them.   Know that what is right for you– and what is 100 percent, wholeheartedly right for you personally– is not the necessity for all of man kind.  Know that the image you’ve placed on your God is completely man made.  I’m not un-diefying your God, mind you.  I’m not saying that what you believe is wrong– absolutely the opposite.  It’s right for you, and if you’re enjoying your experience in this lifetime, then it’s totally PERFECT for you.  Rather, what you’re seeing and believing, is something you have pure faith in– faith that of all the different options you’ve learned about (and hopefully you’ve made the effort to see what all other religious systems purport), your belief system is what feels the most right to you!Above all, I encourage you to question.  Question all those things you were taught as a child.  You’ll probably come right back to the things you were taught– though you might not.  If you do come back, your faith in your beliefs will increase exponentially.  Your understanding of all of the other systems, too, will increase.  And what a well-rounded person you’ll be!  In that off chance, that perhaps you don’t come back to where you were taught, consider yourself to be blessed with the knowledge of other people’s belief systems, having been personally educated in it in your past.  That, my friend, is perhaps the most beautiful part of faith.  Your faith is a tried, tested, and true faith.  It does not blindly lead you into death knowing that there is no other option or idea out there.  Rather, it strengthens your trust in your ability to make such an important decision for yourself and having full “faith” that what you’ve chosen is just right for you.
