What is Creativity?

November 11th 2009 in People Watching

Taken from a group of highly artistic people during the arts festival, “DreamTime,” these excerpts are beautifully worded answers to the  question, “What is creativity?”

Thank you to all of the beautiful people who answered this question: Landon, Bryan, Ryan, Tenaya, Kevin, Audrey, Katrisa, and Kevin.  I miss you all, dearly.

“Creativity is the child-like expression from the higher consciousness, and the more in tune you are with your higher consciousness, the more child-like creative expression you will have. “

“Creativity, to me, is an outward expression of a person’s inner self; [a self] which they try to go forth and bring this realization of art and creativity to define themselves as an individual in the universe.”

“The idea of rating creativity is the idea of rating ego.  And to be egotistical or ego-centered is appalling to me…. What is creativity?  I think it’s inspiration divined through the inner most self that we are as men, women, and as symbiotic relationship with the idea and natural harmony with God, which is actually encompassed within every individual being.  That is creativity.”

“I call it the spirit that inspires each particular individual.  And sometimes we feel it through a gentle goose bump that descends through our crown chakra into our very core and center.  That is the idea of creation.  As long as your crown chakra is open you are open to an infinite amount of possibilities.”

“Creativity is the expression of a person’s muse upon them; and [it is] exploring that and making it so other people can see it, or hear it, or feel it, or experience it in general.”

“Creativity is when you make something.  It’s creating and so it can come out in many different ways.  It can be creating a solution, it can be creating art.  People always imagine creativity is an artistic expression, but I think  you can be very creative in engineering something on a computer.  Engineering a solution to a problem.  I rate myself high in creativity for problem-solving but also for artistic stuff.  And I like making artistic solutions.”

“It’s the outpouring of everything inside of you. I mean whenever you look at something or feel something and it inspires something inside of you to build or to change or just move it in whatever direction is inside of you.  That’s creativity.”

“Um, I think creativity has more to do with being able to take things and synthesize them into an expression.  And I’d also [like to] make a difference between creativity and artistic-ness.  Like, I don’t think I’m very artistic.  I’m creative in my mind, but I’m not very artistic, you know?  I do crafts and things, but I follow patterns.  So I don’t really consider that creative, you know, in the sense that I mean?”

I’m not so certan that brutal honesty suits me nearly as much as it would had I chosen to begin this path with anonymity. Seriously, though, had I considered that an option any of the handfuls of times I “started something new,” I wouldn’t have done it. Mostly because I need people I know to read these things. I guess I’m like the life insurance sales person who insists on showing the presentation to all of her friends, because why wouldn’t they want to purchase life insurance from me? Huh, Why?!

*sigh* It’s the exhibitionist in me. She’s died back a little. I no longer feel the need to drink copious amounts of cheap liquor and then take my clothes off for everyone. That’s nice. I guess.

Book Review! The Gathering

To quote Kelly, “This was a fine book.” And fine it was. Not as in “fine, okay, whatever,” but as in, “girl, you are looking mighty fine on this fair eve.”

Anne Enright has a rare talent to weave words together and give otherwise unsuspecting inanimate objects life and fervor. This is a story of a woman and her dysfunctional family, and the pieces are all weaved together surrounding the suicide of her closest brother. In dissecting the memories and stories of childhood, Veronica comes to some dumbfounding realizations and, ultimately, understanding of herself and her brother, Liam.
