How to Support Your Child’s Fine and Gross Motor Development at Home and Preschool
The best and fastest way to develop a child’s fine and gross motor skills is not a pencil and paper task, assigning homework, or creating exercise drills. It’s rice play, having fun on a swing, jumping off rocks, drawing stories, rolling down hills, climbing trees, and spinning in circles. Sometimes the things that can impact a child’s life the most are things they do for the pure fun of it.
Why ages three to five matter so much
Between the ages of three and five, children are wiring their brains for movement more than at any other age. Pincer grasp is becoming precise. Core strength is finally catching up so that your child can truly crank it while running, and jumping. Their vestibular system is learning to stay balanced while getting dizzy with glee at every spin, swing, and wobble. Muscles, ligaments, and other connective tissue are also developing. This all happens at different rates for different children, but you can assume it’s a reasonably urgent project going on for your child.
The mistake we all make is assuming that this sort of development needs to be scheduled. A class, a session with Mama, a little “activity time.” The truth is you’re getting more useful practice into a child pouring its own milk during a meal than what they can get out of ten minutes of a structured fine-motor-skill game because a real task has stakes. And feedback. And repetition.
The case for letting them do it themselves
Many parents may find this hard to hear, but when you do things for your child that they can do themselves, you are inadvertently hindering their progress. For example, zipping their jacket because it’s quicker. Carrying their backpack because their arms seem tired. Pouring juice because you don’t want spills. Every time you make these substitutions, it appears to be a loving or harmless swap, but you are then stealing a repetition from the child.
When a child dresses themselves, they are using their pincer grasp, bilateral coordination, and proprioception all at once – their fingers are buttoning and zipping while their body is balancing while standing on one leg to put on pants. When a child carries their own bag, they are strengthening their shoulder and core. When a child pours a drink, they are practicing hand-eye coordination and the fine motor skill of knowing how hard to squeeze to avoid overflow. None of this requires explicit teaching of the “skill”. It just requires the child to have the space and time to do it imperfectly and on their own.
This is the heart of Montessori. It also happens to be the heart of raising a child who is mentally strong. Children want to be independent. In life skills, at least, we rob them of that autonomy when we step in too early or too often.
Chores are motor training in disguise
Household chores are unfairly maligned as “babysitting” and a way to keep kids “busy.” Yet they are among the most physiologically rewarding movement a home can offer. Sweeping is a low-tech way to practise cross-body movement, with the broom moving from one side of the body to the other. Wiping a table gives the shoulders the kind of stabilizing work a child also gets from hanging from a tree branch.
And the kid finishing up a bout of folding – his shirtsleeves more likely to end up under than over – has enjoyed a fine functional-finger-muscle workout of the kind necessary for skilled tool use, and eventually (one hopes) writing. Strength? Digging in the garden can fill that need. Pouring, scooping, and funneling seeds can work those small hand muscles too. Washing windows, walls, counters? Pinch the rag and “have at it!” One boy’s mother asked me if I thought her five-year-old grandson was too young to learn to shampoo carpets. That’s core-strength work too, buddy.
What a good preschool day is actually doing
Play is the main way that motor development happens at school, and in a well-run early years classroom, you don’t need to announce that it’s “gross motor time” or “fine motor time” for it to be occurring in every session. Block building is working the hands and eyes and often the feet. Climbing frames are crossing the midline and using the whole body, and they’re giving children the feeling of their own impact on gravity that they need to develop the core strength demanded of a good pencil grip. Playdough, like scissors and painting, works the pincer grasp. Small objects in a sensory tray work the same intrinsics that will later help to hold a pencil.
What adults may fail to notice is that while the little girl trying and failing to pick up the bead with her pincer grip might not be receiving formal handwriting instructions in any truly play-based setting the way she might be if she was stuck in school the entire day, she actually is currently working the pincer grip, every bit as much as the girl at the other table who is thrilled at picking it up with her pincer grip in order to stick it into a piece of card. The informal, almost subconscious nature of that kind of learning often means it doesn’t get counted, though it always matters. Scaffolding: help with the hardest part only
A relevant concept from developmental psychology, known as scaffolding, based on Vygotsky’s theories, can be applied to how parents and teachers can support a child who is struggling with a physical task. The principle is to let the child try to do the entire task, then step in to help with the hardest part which the child cannot do alone.
For example, a child who is struggling to put on their socks doesn’t need an adult to put the socks on for them but needs an adult to hold the sock open at the heel for two seconds while the child pulls up the sock. A child who is having difficulty with a zipper doesn’t need someone else to zip it up for them, but they need someone to line up the two sides so the child can pull the zipper up.
This teaches the child that requiring some effort is normal and that with minimal assistance a solution can be found. It is not easy and might take more time than necessary, for instance, to watch a child struggle for a minute and a half with a coat zipper before it is eventually fully zipped by an adult. However, it is during that fumbling 90 seconds that the child will actually learn how to perform that skill.
Healthy risk versus real danger
Excessive protection is a subtle reason for late motor development. Such behavior is well-intentioned but can be observed in parents who won’t let their child climb a bit higher, use a real (under supervision) knife to cut soft fruit, or run ahead on a path. They are trying to prevent injuries. However, children adjust their own proprioception and risk estimation from such small supervised tasks. If they are consistently removed, the child doesn’t become safer, but rather becomes unable to precisely estimate their physical limits, in situations where the risk is higher and there is no adult around.
A parent’s practical skill in this area is in distinguishing healthy risk from real danger. Climbing a tree branch two feet off the ground while being supervised is healthy risk. Climbing near an edge with no fence is not safe. Eating a banana by cutting it with a proper knife under direct supervision is a healthy risk. Handing a four-year-old child a knife and leaving them is not. This line may not always be clear but it does exist, and avoiding risk to too high a degree may lead to serious developmental consequences.
Screen time is working against you
Let’s be clear: device use eats up the gross motor development time a child would have spent and the hand-strengthening grip and manipulation work that a child would have spent, including the development of fine motor control. Swiping a screen trains almost none of the same muscles as holding a crayon or pinching a bead, which fine motor control requires. This is part of why the World Health Organization 2019 guidelines advise a full three- and four-year-old to get at least 180 minutes of physical activity a day, with at least 60 minutes of that being energetic play. A gross-motor and hand-to-eye skill double whammy is what you’re fighting. A screen hour isn’t just a wasted hour – it’s an hour’s lack of development of the exact skills we’re discussing.
When to actually worry
In most cases, motor development is uneven and works itself out in the end. But here’s the thing – while most parents are unlikely to miss the big, unmistakable signs of motor delays, such as rolling late as a baby or still not walking by age two, the subtler red flags that something’s a little off are tougher to distinguish from run-of-the-mill variation. Red flags to take seriously might include: toe-walking that persists past the toddler years; an inability to hold a crayon with any sort of grip by four; frequent falling when the child is not even approaching anything too tricky or high and you wouldn’t expect them to be especially cautious; real difficulty managing stairs by five. These are the things parents should raise with a pediatrician or an occupational therapist.
Let them do the hard part
There is nothing new that we need to add to children’s lives, no equipment that we need to buy them, no curriculum that we need to write, and certainly no weekend workshop that we need to attend. This is about not taking over a child’s struggle to put on their shoes even when we are running late, handing the dustpan and brush to a five-year-old even though large piles of dirt are left, looking at a wobbly climb and seeing practice, not a trip to A&E. Skills are not built in the moments that we lead. They are built in the moments that we hold back.
